I have a favor to ask of everyone.

As Donald Trump becomes the 45th President of the United States, I am concerned about the seemily insurmountable divide that exists in America today.

Now I don’t really care whether you voted for Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton, or someone else, but I do care about our country. Which is why I want to ask you a favor today. It is a pretty simple favor, but something that I think is important.

All I ask of you today is that you actually take the time to talk to at least one of your neighbors today. I am hoping you will be willing to spend a few minutes with someone who lives next door to you or across the street. It doesn’t have to be a long converstation, but please be willing to say more than just “hello.”

If we want to try to heal the divide, to bring people back together as Americans and move this country forward, we have to get invested in our communities again. The first step is to get to know the people you share that community with, so please, take a few minutes and talk to at least one of your neighbors today. It is much more difficult to disparage and denigrate someone you know, then it is to make inane comments on social media, so go knock on your neighbors door and introduce yourself if you have to, but get to know the people who live around you.

My request may seem overly simplistic, but once you get to know your neighbors, then you can get to know your neighborhood. After that, you can get to know the members of an ever larger community. If you are willing to do this, then I think you will find that we Americans have more in common then most people think.

It is time we stop looking to our statehouses, or Washington, to fix our problems. We need to start working on our own solutions, to our own problems and issues. This won’t happen unless we are all part of a community, and we can’t be part of a community if you don’t know the people in that community.

Are you willing to take thhe first step?

Are you willing to talk to at least one of your neighbors today?
